Minnesota Guardsman first at the finish line
In January of 2023, Erickson received the opportunity to compete for selection into the All-National Guard Endurance team. After a rigorous process, he earned a roster spot taking on the additional duty alongside his current Minnesota Army National Guard service as the officer in charge for the Headquarters, 2nd Battalion, 136 Infantry Regiment.
“If you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability with maximum effort,” said Erickson.
That mindset has driven his performance across several multi-discipline endurance events, including two Dekafits and one Hyrox race. In August, Erickson added two more milestones to his record: finishing first in his age group for the Super Spartan 10k and fourth in his age group during the Spartan Beast 21k race.
The courses tested more than the ability to run fast. With steep hills, uneven terrain and demanding obstacles, the competitors were tested both on endurance and strength. For a competitor to remain successful during the multiple event competition, preparation and recovery is essential.
“Hydrating early and always, ensuring you eat the right foods, in the right quantities, at the right intervals,” said Erickson.
“Too often athletes compromise their food and rest plan when they travel for races”. For Erickson, being part of the All-National Endurance Team extends beyond individual accolades.
“When I put on my uniform or my team jersey, I don’t just represent myself, I represent the Minnesota National Guard, and the United States Military. A duty is owed every time you wear it.”
His success comes from hours of daily training, defined through physical and mental discipline. Overall, the Minnesota Army National Guard Captain said it best, “You are often defined by the company you keep, and this team keeps the caliber exceptionally high.”
