Twin Ports Interchange bridge inspections to take place Sept. 21-24 (Sept. 16, 2026)

DULUTH, Minn. –  The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be conducting routine bridge inspections at the Twin Ports Interchange next week. Motorists can expect lane and ramp closures between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Monday, Sept. 21 left lane closure on the I-35 northbound ramp to I-535 Blatnik Bridge
  • Tuesday, Sept. 22 I-535 Blatnik Bridge ramp to both Highway 53 and I-35 southbound closed. A detour will be posted to take northbound I-35 to 5th Ave W to southbound I-35.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 23 I-35 southbound ramp to I-535 Blatnik Bridge closed. A detour will be posted to take Highway 53 northbound to 21st Ave W to Highway 53 southbound to I-535
  • Thursday, Sept. 24 I-535 Blatnik bridge ramp to northbound I-35 closed. A detour will be posted to take northbound Highway 53 to 21st Ave W to southbound Highway 53 to northbound I-35.

If inclement weather occurs, that day’s closure will be rescheduled in the future.

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.

  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Do the  zipper merge.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
